UEFA Champions League quarter-final: Karim Benzema knocks out Chelsea with extra-time winning goal
Despite losing 3-2 to Chelsea on Tuesday, Karim Benzema’s extra-time goal took Real Madrid to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudigar and Timo Warner reversed Real Madrid’s 3-1 advantage from the first leg last week, but Rodrigo’s great volley forced a tie in extra time.
Benzema, who scored a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge, was the final, though, thundering in the header in the sixth minute of extra time to seal the victory 5-4.

Chelsea’s strong start was rewarded in the 15th minute when Thibaut passed Cortuas from inside the Mount penalty area and passed Werner’s nazed ball. Chelsea equalized in the sixth minute of the second half with a powerful header from Rudigar Mount’s cross to Kurtoor.
Alonso thought he had put Chelsea in the lead 11 minutes later when he pushed a corner from eight yards out, but his attempt for a handball was canceled after a VAR check.

Shortly after Benzema smashed a header against the crossbar, Warner gave Chelsea an overall lead with a strike in the 75th minute that was too hot for Courtois.
With 10 minutes left, Madrid returned to the tie, however, Rodrigo, who was on the pitch for just two minutes, played a great volley, behind Eduard Mendy from Luka Modric’s suffocating cross.
This set the stage for Benzema’s decisive goal in extra time, leaving Mendy behind 10 yards after fine work on the left of Vinicius Jr. to head France international.
