Alcaraj, ranked 11th in the world, arrived in Monte-Carlo in red-hot form, capturing his first ATP Masters 1000 crown in Miami. However, the 18-year-old, who made his debut at the Clay-Court event, was unable to adapt to heavy rain, variability and wind conditions at Court Rainier III.
The Americans rallied from the breakdown in the third set and headed in the wrong direction with the wind and a few long rallies as the match progressed.
