- Riley Opelka has had a good year so far and has entered the tournament as one of the favorites to be ranked No. 3.
- Opelka got off to a bad start this year, losing the first round after losing to Maxim Cressi in the Melbourne Summer Set. However, he returned quickly after playing in the semifinals at Cindy International.
- At the Australian Open, he reached the third round and lost to Denis Shapovalov.
- Opelka won her first title at the Dallas Open this year, beating Jenson Brooksby in a straight set. He then reached the final of the Beach Open in Delaware and lost to Cameron Nari in the final.
- At the Indian Wells Masters, he lost to Rafael Nadal in the third round and then exited the first round of the Miami Open.

- Meanwhile, Isner’s run was bad in this year’s hard court season. He started 2022 with two consecutive first-round defeats at the Adelaide International and the Australian Open.
- He was able to reach the semifinals in Dallas, where he went straight down to Reilly Opelkar after a tough fight.
- He then lost in the second round of the Mexican Open, exited the Indian Wells in the third round, and lost in the first round at the Miami Open.
- Isner, however, showed good form in Houston. He got a bye in the first round and defeated Steve Johnson in the second round. He then went on to win the battle against Frances Tiafo and Christian Garin. So far all his wins have come in three-setters.
