Two-time Madrid finalist Azarenka, who was runners-up to Petra Kevitova in 2011 and Serena Williams in 2012, will next face Tamara Zidanesek or the lucky loser Beatriz Haddad Maya.
The second round of the Madrid Open is already in full swing, with two-time champion Simona Halep and World No. 2 Paula Badosa quickly facing each other after the openers.
Halep made a flying start to his 2022 campaign in the Spanish capital at the Manolo Santana Stadium, defeating Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-3.
Badosa followed suit on the same court, sweeping the last nine games to beat Veronica Kudarmetova 6-3, 6-0.
