Mercedes has been wrestling with the ‘porposing’ problem since the start of the season, with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton already 58 points behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc after four races. Hamilton finished 13th at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Emola last Sunday.
Shovlin said in a brief statement on the team’s YouTube channel that the problem has created new engineering challenges that Mercedes needs to understand.
“Hopefully soon, perhaps with Miami, we can start bringing some parts to the car which will hopefully give us an indication of whether we are on the right track.” He said.

“We’re not hoping to fix it overnight, but if we can get a clue that we’re on the right track, that we’ve got to the bottom of what’s really happening, then we’re glad we’re just moving forward. On the right track.”
The bouncing problem has forced the team, now third in the standings, to drive more than their car plans, which affects aerodynamic performance. Shovlin said a lot of work is being done at the factory to understand the phenomenon and to see if there is an aerodynamic solution to move it away.
“Being realistic, we think it’s going to be something we do step by step instead of a big moment where the whole thing disappears.” He added.
“But we’re seeing encouraging signs … we’re hoping to bring car parts soon, even in Miami where we hope to see progress.”
