Dhawan started the year with three scores of 30+ for the Punjab Kings but could not convert them into big scores. Today in Pune, from the first ball, Dhawan and his opening partner Mayank Agarwal got the team off to a great start. Although Mayank played the role of attacker, Dhawan anchored the innings first. The pair put on 97 runs for the opening wicket.

When Mayank was dismissed for 52, Dhawan was 34 off 25 balls. Only then, did he decide to shift his gears and move on to the scoring spree. He hit 50 off 37 balls. After a quick two-wicket haul, Dhawan took responsibility for ensuring his team’s big score. In the 17th over he decided to take on Basil Thampi and hit a six in the deep-midwicket. He went on to take one more shot, trying to hit over the long on fielder, but made the mistake of dismissing the fielder directly after scoring 70 runs correctly.
Through play, Dhawan is now in the top 3 of the Orange Cap list, scoring 197 runs in five matches. He is just 21 runs behind table-topper Joss Butler, who has scored 218 runs so far.
