Gordon Elliott claimed a four-timer on day 1 of the 2022 Punchtown Festival but Willie Mullins took two Grade 1s in his first day treble.
Energumene (4 / 7f) backed his champion Chase win at Cheltenham last month by impressing William Hill champion Steeplechase in Panchatown this afternoon. At the hands of Paul Townend, Willie Mullins was a prisoner of eight-and-a-half lengths, Chacun Por Soi (5/2) under Patrick Mullins, and Envoy Allen returned to third place with six more lengths on 11/1 chances.

Mullins Grade 1 Double
Capodano (11/4) gave Mullins a 1st grade double as he won in the colors of JP McManus. Mark Walsh defeated the attacking winner Lifetime Ambition and Robbie Power in a race where the lucky Cheltenham winner and today’s favorite, Bob Olinger, was drawn.
Cappadano, Manduro’s son, was six-and-a-half times better than the runner-up, while Fury Road (15/2) and Jack Kennedy were third.

Patrick Mullins Mick brought a Closaton 1-2 to the Tent Flat Race when Lisnagar Fortune (11 / 4jf) defeated owner-breeder Dennis Fitzgerald. Lisnagar Fortune has overtaken Vadsa Quinn and Jodie Townend in the final stages of the race for Tim Mullins.

Mighty Potter (20/1) is a surprise winner for Grade 1 Bactive Stud Champion Nevis Hurdle, the second Grade 1 winner of the season.
The race was billed as a clash between Willie Mullins-handled duo Desert Dynamo, a Cheltenham student and Sir Gerhard, winner of last month’s Grade 1 Balimore Navis Hurdle.
Desert Dynamo defeated the first runner, but took part in most of the race races. When Sir Gerhard led his efforts to challenge, Gordon Elliott-trained Jack Kennedy-Rodd was not strong enough to fight Mighty Potter, who went for a four-length success. The big outsider Gatsby Gray (100/1) took the runner-up position under Paul Townend, 4 / 7f, six and a half more behind Sir Gerhard.

After finishing seventh in Party Central (9 / 42f) Cheltenham, Howden Insurance brokers are back on the road to victory after taking part in the Meres Navis Hurdle (listed) opening competition. Vital Island goes even better in the Ladies Perpetual Cup
For the Ladies Perpetual Cup, the Kildar Hunt Club made their way to the cross country Chase Vital Island (7/2), who went one place better than last year. Bay Zelding Good Bye Sam held off Patrick Mullins’ strong late challenge, giving the runner-up 12 12.
