England Test captain: Former England captain Nasser Hussein warns Ben Stokes, “Trust your decision, don’t be captained by a committee” England’s new Test captain Ben Stokes should learn to trust his own decision rather than “captain by committee” and limit his bowling responsibilities to prevent a burnout, says former captain Nasser Hussein. Stokes was unveiled as Joe Root’s successor on Thursday and England are under a talismanic all-rounder in hopes of changing their Test fortunes.

Under Root, England have won just one of their last 16 Tests, including a 4-0 Ashes loss to Australia and a 1-0 series defeat to the West Indies.

“The point is that Ben is his own man. He’s driven, he has a good cricketing mind, “Hussein wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“Ben has to use his gut, and my only advice is not to make him captain by the committee.

“Sometimes there was too much input from outsiders along the route, so he didn’t find the gut feeling for the strategy.”

Stokes has been battling an injury lately and took a break last year to take care of his mental health.
Hussein says Rob Key, who was appointed new managing director of England men’s cricket earlier this month, will have to save Stokes from a burnout.

“Obviously, his work will require stress management. The key is to work, in terms of golf, his major, “Hussein added.

“For a team that has won just one of 17 matches and is at the bottom of the World Test Championship, combining some wins is the number one priority.”

Hussein hoped Stokes would either skip the bilateral ODI series or play as a batsman.

“Whatever happens, if he needs a break – and Stokes has to be honest with the key and the selectors – then England should pay attention.

“There is no point in bowling yourself on the ground, which affects the balance of the team. He should be England’s fifth bowler, no more.

Stokes began his tenure in June with a two-Test series against his native New Zealand.
