FC Goa lost their head coach Juan Ferrando last season when Antonio Lopez Habas resigned from his post at ATK Mohun Bagan. The Kolkata giants immediately made an offer to Juan Ferrendo and joined the Spaniard. In his absence, Derrick Pereira took the reins of FC Goa.

Speaking to fcgoa.in after signing the dotted line, Pena said, “I am happy to be back as head coach at FC Goa. It was a very simple decision. And when I had the offer to play a big role in Albacete and other Spanish clubs, it was a good idea to pass the offer on FC Goa. “
“After serving as the assistant coach and head coach of the youth team for the last two seasons, I believe this is the right opportunity for me.
“Everyone knows my love for this club and the history we share. Now my only focus is to bring FC Goa back to the top. I’m here to work hard and bring more success to the club and I can’t wait to get started. “
FC Goa president Akshay Tandon is also happy with the appointment. “We are delighted to welcome Carlos Pena as our head coach at FC Goa,” he said. Carlos is a leader and a real student of the game. He has a wealth of knowledge and a great understanding of clubs and our football philosophy.
“He did an amazing job in his first season as head coach at Albes, nurturing the youngsters at the club. We hope he will continue to do so for us.

“After 2 years with us as a player, at a time when he was an icon of the club, we believe that this is the right time for him to return and he is happy to do it. We will do our best to ensure that he and his entire coaching team have the support for the huge success. ”
A UEFA Pro Licensee, the last two seasons have seen Pena go into coaching after retiring at the end of the 2019/20 season. The new FC Goa coach began his coaching career with Lorca’s youth team before moving to UCAM Murcia.
Pena’s credentials continue to grow stronger with each passing day as the former FC Goa baseman completes the 2020/21 season as Lleida Esportiu’s senior team assistant coach.
The former Barcelona man took control of the Balompi youth team in Albacete early last season, planning their campaign in the Juvenil League. Considered one of the best youth leagues in the world, nurturing the talents of all major La Liga clubs, Albacete had a season to remember so far.
Carlos Pena will address the media
Under Penner’s direction, the club has scored more goals in the Juvenile League this season than any other season in the last 20 years. They drew a double on a strong Villarreal team during the draw with Atletico Madrid, leading the club to a 17-year-old Ruben Cantero from the youth team to make his senior team debut.
Offensive flair has been a feature of Penar’s team so far where the team has recorded 7-1 and 5-1 wins against Calavera and Algiers this season, respectively.
Before playing at Albacete, Pena represented their C and B teams in Barcelona. After spending four years at the club, the former defender spent a season at Recreativo de Huelva before moving to Real Valladolid in 2010.
Pena spent five years at the club helping him return to La Liga in his second season. He has represented Ovido, Getafe and finally Lorca FC before being handed the ropes by Gaur in 2018.

The Spaniard’s compliment is the UEFA European U19 Championship, which he won in 2002 with his home country. He was also part of the team that was runners-up in the 2003 FIFA U20 World Cup.
In his first season with FC Goa, Pena helped the club reach the ISL final before leading them to their first silverware in the 2019 Super Cup. The Spaniards helped in the history of Gaur script as FC Goa players in 2019/20 when they became the first Indian team to qualify for the group stage of the AFC Champions League.
Pena has amassed 43 senior appearances as a player for FC Goa, behind which his presence has helped the club establish itself as a real powerhouse.
